Where Nature Competes. Welcome Home.

Eight chapters on what Ljubač is, who we owe it to and what we are building together.

I. There is a place

There is a place where olive trees planted before you were born are waiting for you.
Where the path you walk was cleared by hands you never met.
Where the sea does not remember seasons – it remembers people.

That place is called Ljubač.

It is hard to describe what Ljubač is. It is easier to describe how it feels to be there.

As if you have arrived somewhere. As if something in you – something you carried without knowing it – can finally rest.

Welcome Home.

II. Gratitude to every generation

The Ljubač we are building today is not ours.

We are only one chapter in the long story of this place. A story that began long before us and, if we are wise and careful, will continue long after us.

  • Every dry-stone wall we restore is a thank-you to those who built it without cranes or machines, by hand, stone by stone, under the Mediterranean sun.
  • Every olive grove we restore continues the work of generations who knew that an olive tree does not grow for you, but for your grandchildren.
  • Every path we clear remembers everyone who walked it with baskets, with tools, with children by the hand.

Tradition is not a burden. Tradition is a compass.

And every time an Erasmus student from Frankfurt sits beside an older woman from Ljubač and learns how olives are picked – two generations, two cultures, two stories – something passes between them that cannot be written down or measured.

That is what we are building.

III. An anchor

We live in a time that keeps speeding up and never slows down.
Everything is available. Nothing lasts. Everything changes. Everyone is always somewhere else.

In a world like that, one of the most precious things a person can have is an anchor.

Not an anchor that holds you to the bottom. An anchor that gives you the freedom to drift far – because you know you can come back.

Ljubač wants to be that anchor.

  • For the volunteer from Amsterdam who comes for a week and returns every year.
  • For the Erasmus student who came once and carries Ljubač inside her as something that changed how she sees what life can be.
  • For the descendant of a village family living in Sydney who one day, perhaps, sees a photo of an olive grove and feels something they cannot name.
  • For the young person from Zadar looking for a connection to something real, something that is not a screen or city noise.
  • For the villager who sometimes forgets how much they have – until they see a stranger look at the same thing with wonder and gratitude.

Only when you feel good can you be good for others.
Only with one safe place can you walk bravely into the unknown.

Ljubač is that place.

IV. Where Nature Competes

Ljubač is a place where nature competes.

An athlete running through an olive grove at a national championship is not only racing the clock. They run through history, through silence, through a landscape shaped over thousands of years by work and love.

A bike tyre biting into gravel on the cyclocross course does not just ride over ground – it rides across plots we opened through agreement and trust, where the legal system could not.

A team of Erasmus students competing at the olive harvest is not playing a game. They are touching a tradition thousands of years old – and it touches them back.

Competing in Ljubač is not only sport. It is a dialogue between people and place.

That is why Ljubač draws national and regional events in cross-country running, cyclocross and cross duathlon – again and again, year after year, season after season. Not because of infrastructure. Because of character.

The ground chose Ljubač, not the other way round.

V. Land that waits

More than half of the olive groves in Ljubač are neglected.
More than half of the farmland yields nothing.
Paths stayed impassable for years.
Plots wait for decisions from heirs living in Hamburg, Melbourne and Split.

This is not a tragedy. It is an advantage nobody has recognised yet.

The Za Ljubač association does not wait for the system to solve these problems. It moves ahead. It restores paths across its own plots. It opens new access. On the national cyclocross course, which crosses 70–80% private plots, it shows that agreement is possible where there was none.

Not by force. Not by law. Through trust and shared interest.

A volunteer who lives with a family in Ljubač and helps on their neglected olive grove is more than a pair of hands. They are a mirror for an owner who may have forgotten – or never seen – how much what they have is worth.

That olive grove is not just land. It is inheritance. It is identity. It is a link to the generations who planted without knowing whose hands would pick.

VI. A volunteer village

Ljubač wants to be a volunteer village.

Not a destination for volunteers. A volunteer village. The difference is huge.

A volunteer destination is a project. A volunteer village is a way of life – a community that is open, that welcomes, that gives, and that knows giving strengthens the giver as much as the receiver.

Volunteers in Ljubač will not stay in camps or hostels. They will live with families. Eat at the same table. Do the same work. Share the same mornings and the same evenings.

This is not a tourist package. It is a meeting.

Za Ljubač coordinates that meeting – because without coordination there is no trust, and without trust there is no model.

Especially outside the season.
When Ljubač is calm and quiet. When the sea is different. When the olive trees are waiting for hands.
Then a volunteer is not arriving at a tourist destination.
They are coming home.

VII. What we leave behind

At the end of every Erasmus stay, each student who has been through Ljubač plants one olive sapling.

Not because it is a symbolic gesture, but because an olive tree lives two hundred, three hundred, five hundred years.

Fifty years from now, that student can tell a grandchild: “There, in Dalmatia, on a hill between the sea and the sky, grows a tree I planted.”

And that tree knows nothing of borders, seasons, projects or reports. It only knows how to grow.

Ljubač builds for those trees.

  • It builds in a landscape shaped over generations – one that must be cared for over generations.
  • It builds in a tradition that is not a museum piece but a living practice.
  • It builds in a culture that welcomes and gives, that teaches and learns from others.
  • It builds in nature that has its own rules and is not a backdrop but a partner.

And it builds in the belief that every person – athlete, student, volunteer, villager, heir from the diaspora, child yet to be born – deserves one place in the world that tells them:

“You are welcome. This is yours. Welcome home.”

VIII. Who we are

Za Ljubač is the coordinating force behind all of this.

We are not a travel agency. We are not an NGO in the usual sense. We are not a sports club or a development agency.

We are a community of people who believe Ljubač is worth it – and who prove it with work, not words.

  • We restored paths nobody else restored.
  • We built new ones across our own plots.
  • We opened 70–80% of the private plots for a national championship.
  • We started the olive harvest as a European cultural competition.
  • We laid the groundwork for a volunteer programme that opens Ljubač to all of Europe.

And this is only the beginning.

  • We are looking for institutional partners who understand that development is more than infrastructure.
  • We are looking for volunteers who want to be part of something, not just see something.
  • We are looking for Erasmus students hungry for something authentic.
  • We are looking for villagers and landowners who may have forgotten – but can remember.
  • We are looking for heirs in the diaspora who carry Ljubač inside them, even if they have never been here.

We are looking for everyone who feels – or wants to feel – that there is one place waiting for them.
